Croston Primary School Lancashire

Signalong in a mainstream class

Dear Ms Goode,

My name is Robert Duck and I am a Reception class teacher in a primary school in Lancashire. I am writing to you today to express my support for Signalong and congratulate you and all your team on the work you do.

For my part, I have been using Signalong in my Reception class for the last 3 years. Over this time I have adapted and utilised the signs to help support my classes with their language and writing developments. Initially, I began using it solely to support a boy with speech issues, however, very quickly I realised its potential to support mainstream children as well.

In this first class, 3 years ago, I decided to teach my entire class Signalong so that this little boy did not stand out as being different - we pride ourselves on being a very inclusive school. This allowed everyone to converse with him using a common frame of reference - everyone was learning the signs and initially he could be a class expert to help us along.

To cut a long story short, I now fully incorporate Signalong into my daily teaching and find that it makes a significantly positive impact in supporting all children learn and develop their language skills.

I currently use the very VAK style of learning to help children learn the 'tricky' words in our phonics work alongside the jolly phonics scheme we use to teach letter sounds. I have found these to be very complimentary. This has resulted in some exceptionally high word recognition scores for my last two classes. I am not saying this is solely down to Signalong work but it has made significant impact on some less academic children's progress.

I find using Signalong helps children to understand sentence construction more easily. In class we begin learning numerous single signs which we then begin to put into simple 3 word sentences. For example, I love apples; I like sausages. Children learn that sentences need lots of words to make them work - just like our Signalong sentences! The children have loved it so much we now quiz question each other holding mini conversations in sign alone. For example, 'Do you like apples?' With a child replying: 'Yes, I like apples.' All done in sign.

We have also decided that this year we will be teaching some simple songs using Signalong signs.

I have found that parental support has been exceptionally positive and children share their learning with them very enthusiastically.

I was particularly pleased when our local speech and language therapist came into school and was lost for words. She commented that we are the only school she knows of that uses Signalong with all children and that she would love other schools to be as proactive and enthusiastic as we are. A wonderful compliment that made us very proud.

My apologies for rambling but I wanted to share with you the successes we have had in using Signalong with mainstream pupils, as well as those SEN children it was designed to support, and the hugely positive effect it has had on their lives. I feel too often we seem to keep things like this as separate and exclusive for SEN children and maintain these barriers between children when in fact teaching it across the board has so many other benefits for all children.

I would like to thank you and all your team for the outstanding work they do - you are making a real impact on the lives of so many children. On behalf of teachers everywhere I would just like to say, thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Duck
